This tour will take you along the waters of the West Branch of the Penobscot River. We will ride roads built by Great Northern Paper Company, which they use to haul long logs to their mills to make paper. The road is called the "Golden Road" because of the huge cost of its construction through acres and acres of forestlands and wetlands.
We
have learned it is to your advantage to show you either this area or Baxter
Park or some of each depending on where we have been seeing most moose prior to
your arrival. So please don't make any assumptions about where we will be
going because we have a few "secret" places we are sure to find moose.
On our trip we will visit Ripogenous Dam, built by Great Northern in the early 1900's and completed the hydro generating station in the 50's. We will see the huge canyons made by the river thousands of years before the damming of its waters. The river has cut through hundreds of feet of solid rock. If you are here in the spring early enough, and the rains have been plentiful, you may see these canyons flowing with millions of gallons of water as Great Northern releases the excess.
We will visit an area where years ago loggers floated logs to the mills through miles and miles of lakes to the West Branch River. Here the logs were sluiced down the river to be recovered again at the mills. If we are fortunate to be there at the right time we can sit and watch whitewater rafters and kayakers challenge the river through the "cribwork". From our vantage point, whether eye level at waters edge or high on a ledge above the river, you will see the excitement as their rafts crash through the class four and five whitewater. Be careful or this excitement might get you caught up in it and then you will find yourself riding those waves in one of those rubber boats. All this with a view! The river is in the foreground and Mt. Katahdin in the background with the sweet smell of balsam fir and spruce in the air. This is Maine at its best. Now we will leave the river and head further north to see if we can spot one of the areas most photographed animals, the Moose. On this road they are spotted often and many times are seen licking the salt from the road surface left from the long winter. Before moving on or reserving a tour please check out our Overnight Accommodations because we know you will be very comfortable and get a good night rest at hotel prices. Come be a part of it all and let us show you some of our areas most scenic sights while you sit back and, "let us do the driving." |
